How to Build a Simple Skincare Routine That Actually Works
A three-step routine — cleanse, treat, moisturise — is all most skin needs. Here is how to choose each step and use it correctly.
Most skin does not need ten steps. A consistent three-step routine — cleanse, treat, moisturise — gives better results than a crowded shelf you use occasionally.
1. Cleanse gently
Choose a low-foam cleanser close to skin's natural pH (around 5.5). Harsh, squeaky-clean washes strip the moisture barrier and can make oily skin produce even more oil.
2. Treat with one active
Pick one targeted active for your main concern:
- Dullness or uneven tone: vitamin C in the morning
- Texture or pores: niacinamide
- Dryness: hyaluronic acid or a face oil
Introduce one new active at a time and give it 4–6 weeks before judging results.
3. Moisturise and protect
Seal everything in with a moisturiser. In the morning, always finish with sunscreen — it protects the results of every other step.
Patch test first
Apply a small amount behind the ear or on the inner arm for 24–48 hours before using a new product on your face.
