The Hair Oiling Guide: How Often, How Long and Which Oils
Hair oiling is a centuries-old ritual. Used correctly it strengthens hair and adds shine — here is how to get it right.
Hair oiling has been part of South Asian hair care for generations. Done well, it reduces breakage and adds softness and shine.
How often?
Once or twice a week is enough for most hair types. Very fine or oily scalps may prefer once a week.
How long to leave it in
At least 1 hour, or overnight for very dry lengths. Always shampoo it out thoroughly — oil left on the scalp for days can clog follicles.
How to apply
- Warm a small amount between your palms.
- Massage into the scalp with your fingertips for 5 minutes to boost circulation.
- Work the remainder through the mid-lengths and ends.
Which oils help?
- Amla — traditionally used to strengthen hair
- Argan — smooths the cuticle and tames frizz
- Rosemary — a popular scalp-stimulating botanical
- Black seed — rich in fatty acids that nourish dry lengths
